I’ved worked for 15 years in the mainstream wine industry, but was fedup with the “coca-cola” wines, without identity. Went back to my roots, making wine like my father and my grandfather, with no additions, just pure grape – this is one of the main cornerstones of the Gardunha Sul project. The other cornerstone is the recovery of very old ancient varieties, from the Beira Baixa region, that are cast aside by the Oenologists, and are on the verge of disappearing. This varieties are very well adapted to the harsh conditions of the Beira Baixa region – very cold during winter and very hot and dry during summer – meaning that the incidence of diseases is much lower, translating in less interventions in the vineyard – I only apply Sulfur and Copper to control oidium and mildew. Together with very precise hygiene in the cellar, I can achieve unique wines, with character and expression of the “terroir”, that showcase the imense potential of this grapes and this region.
